It’s time to stop mutilating baby boys’ genitals

Every year millions of baby boys around the world have the foreskin of their penis surgically removed in a procedure called circumcision. This surgery is almost never necessary. It’s purely cosmetic, and it’s done at the request of the parents. The baby has no input, no choice and doesn’t even know it’s happening. Every year hundreds of children die from infections following a circumcision or are permanently deformed from failed operations. There have even been cases where boys survived complications but lost their penis and were raised as girls causing them deep rooted confusion and anxiety which often led to suicide.

Why do so many boys have their genitals mutilated during infancy? The main reason this practice ever caught on and became so widespread is because Judaism and Christianity caught on and became widespread. Those two religions assert that the following words were dictated by the creator of the universe, and says:

“Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant. Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.” Genesis 17:9-14

So according to the book of Genesis, the creator of the universe demanded that all baby boys have their genitals mutilated, otherwise they would be cut off from His people for breaking His one-sided arrangement with humanity. It’s also worth drawing attention to the fact that verses 12 and 13 approve of slavery.

The book of Genesis doesn’t command that female children should have to suffer genital mutilation, but according to Deuteronomy 22:13-28, their burden in the covenant God made with humanity is that they have to submit to being sold into slavery by their fathers.

If it sounds odd to you that an all loving, all powerful, all knowing, infinitely intelligent being would request that baby boys have their genitals mutilated and girls be sold into slavery, then consider this alternative explanation: The Bible isn’t the word of God. It’s one of thousands of primitive mythologies our ancestors invented to explain things they didn’t understand and justify their existing culture.

Even if you hold firm that the Bible is the word of God, you would still never even consider the idea of selling your daughter into slavery regardless of what it says in Deuteronomy 22:13-28. Social Darwinism killed that cultural practice long ago and for obvious reasons. Every modern suburbanite has moved on from believing in something as barbaric as selling our daughters into slavery… yet we’re still holding onto the practice of mutilating our sons’ penises.

When you put aside supernatural justifications for mutilating baby boys’ penises, there are very few practical justifications left and none that stand the test of logical scrutiny. Some people say circumcised penises look better. That’s a matter of opinion, and one human being’s opinion doesn’t supersede another human being’s right to their body. It would be unconscionable to dictate that women should have her labia cut off because someone else thought it would be nice; if that’s true then it’s equally unconscionable for a baby boy to have his foreskin cut off at another person’s whim.

It has also been argued that it’s healthier for boys to have their foreskin removed because it prevents the risk of grime getting trapped in the groin area and becoming infected. This argument is weak for two reasons. First, if your lifestyle is so unsanitary that you’re not washing your penis, you were going to get an infection or worse somewhere anyway.

Second, it’s unlikely that the foreskin of the penis was a design flaw that requires human intervention to correct. The more you know about how the human body is designed the more it will amaze you. It’s so well designed that many people cite its miraculous complexity and efficiency as evidence that God exists. Regardless of whether or not God exists, the chances of the foreskin being a design flaw is slim to none.

To this you might say, “God does exist. His name is Yahweh, and He divinely inspired the Bible. I may not understand why the creator of the universe would want us to mutilate our sons’ penises, but it’s not my place to question God. So that’s what I’m going to do.”

To that I would say, then why don’t you demand that your politicians pass a law reflecting what God commanded in Leviticus 19:20-22, which says that whenever a man sleeps with a female slave who is promised to another man, he must sacrifice a ram at the entrance to the local elders’ tent to make amends for his crime?

No sane, rational person would literally expect men who have sex with unwed slaves to have to sacrifice a ram at the entrance to their civic/religious leaders’ tent as penance. Atheists, agnostics and most Christians have already stopped expecting that, because we know that God didn’t command that; it’s a barbaric concept that could only have been imagined by primitive tribesmen who believed in mythology. The same is true for male circumcision. It always has been and always will be. That’s why it’s long past time to stop mutilating baby boys’ genitals. Men’s penises aren’t broken, and fixing what isn’t broken only breaks it.

However you felt about this post, you’ll probably feel the same way about these:

The Bible is mythology

Christianity is bad for you and society

Churches and Christian Culture

Circumcision is a medical procedure that has been practiced by physicians for centuries to reduce phimosis (the inability to retract the foreskin at an age when it should normally be retractable), paraphimosis (the PAINFUL inability to retract the foreskin to its original location) as well as reduces chances to get UTI (urinary tract infection)’s and STD (sexually transmitted disease)’s. Not to mention that it lowers the risk of penis related cancers as well as cancers of the cervix, uterus and ovaries of sexual partners. Several large studies have also revealed that there is a large decrease in HIV transmission in circumsized males compared to those who are uncircumsized. The foreskin is extra glans and skin that just harbors bad bacteria. Physicians of course remind the parent(s) of the infant of the pros and cons of circumcision and, blatantly speaking, a child is not advised or allowed to make his/her own decisions (wisely) until he/she is 18 years of age, let alone capable to form complete thoughts until they’re in grade school; by then the circumcision process would be extremely painful, more so than in the first week of a child’s birth.

The Foreskin is an important Organ of the body, and a vital part of the Immune system. Just as the eyelid protects the eye, the foreskin protects the glans. The foreskin also maintains optimal warmth, pH balance, and cleanliness. The glans itself contains no sebaceous glands – glands that produce the moisturizing oil that our skin needs to stay healthy. The foreskin produces the oil that keeps the surface of the glans soft and healthy.

Circumcision is not simply the cutting off of useless skin. Author Gary L. Harryman ennumerates what circumcision destroys:
***Its connective synechia, which fuses the foreskin to the glans during development.
***Approximately half of the smooth muscle sheath called the dartos fascia.
***Most of the erotogenic nerve endings
***Specialized epithelial Langerhans cells, a component of the immune system.
***Thousands of coiled fine-touch receptors, including the Meissner’s corpuscles.
***Estrogen receptors–the purpose and value of which are not yet fully understood.
***Ectopic sebaceous glands, which lubricate and moisturize.
***The protective covering of the glans, normally an internal structure. The foreskin shields from abrasion, drying, and callusing, and protects from dirt and other contaminants.
***The entire immunological defense system of the soft mucosa, which may produce antibacterial and antiviral proteins such as lysozyme, also found in mother’s milk, and plasma cells, which secrete immunoglobulin antibodies.
***Lymphatic vessels, the loss of which interrupts the lymph flow within a part of the body’s immune system.
***The frenulum, the sensitive “V” shaped tethering structure on the underside of the glans is also usually amputated, severed, or destroyed.
***The apocrine glands, which produce pheromones, nature’s powerful, silent, invisible signals to potential partners.
***As much as 50% or more of the total penile skin, radically immobilizing and desensitizing whatever skin remains.
***The “gliding” mechanism. If unfolded and spread out flat, the average adult foreskin would measure 15-20 square inches, the size of a postcard. This abundance of specialized, self-lubricating skin allows the ability to smoothly “glide” back and forth within itself, permitting non-abrasive intercourse, without drying out the vagina.
***The pink to red to dark purple natural coloration of the glans.
***10% to 20% of its circumference because its double-layered wrapping of loose foreskin is now missing.
*** As much as one inch of erection length due to scarring and shrinkage from loss of the foreskin.
***Several feet of blood vessels, including the frenular artery and branches of the dorsal artery, the loss of which interrupts normal blood flow to the shaft and glan, damaging its natural function and possibly stunting its growth.
*** An estimated 240 feet of microscopic nerves, including branches of the dorsal nerve.
*** Perhaps most importantly, between at least 10,000 to 20,000 specialized erotogenic nerve endings of various types, which can discern slight motion, subtle changes in temperature, and fine gradations in texture.
*** And occasionally a boy will lose his life from this needless operation. It has been estimated that as many as between 100-150 babies die EVERY year from circumcision and related complications.

Please share this list with others, especially anyone who says the foreskin is a useless piece of skin or that circumcision is no big deal. The Foreskin is a vital ORGAN and an important part of immune system. Many men, after reading this list and researching, are greatly saddened by the realization of what they have lost. Many are suing their doctors for doing harm and taking away this vital part of their anatomy.

As an uncircumcised man, let me chime in. Your hygiene issues are more problematical. In later life you have to deal with potential foreskin shrinkage. (showing my age, *sigh*) Some infections are more prevalent to uncircumcised men than circumcised, including Aids. Not that I am going to rush out and be circumcised, but it is not all good or bad.

    • laurie12013

Nearly all women I know deal with yeast infections etc. Hygiene is just something we deal with. If you’re having a problem with foreskin shrinkage they do make exercises for that.
      Myth: Circumcision prevents HIV/AIDS.

  • Giordano Mirandolla

Actually, circumcision was considered an entirely Jewish thing for thousands of years, and it was only after a doctor wrote a treatise on how it could stop masturbation that it caught on with non-Jews in America. Now people just do it because they themselves had it done to them, without real regard for the Bible.

Which would support your point, but would make you less smug about those currr-azy believers.

Is something missing from your sex life? It may be the missing skin…

  • chandlerklebs

Come to think of it, if the foreskin of the penis was such a design flaw that it needs to be corrected, it would imply that the creator did not know what it was doing. I never thought much about the circumcision issue since I was already circumcised, but I do think that if people are going to cut body parts off, they need better reasons than an ancient book.
